Multi-spot zoning: A chain of public–private development ventures in Tel Aviv

The paper discusses the cumulative aspects of flexible planning’s engagement with massive public–private (PP) development ventures, tracing five ventures in Tel Aviv–Jaffa and analyzing each as a link in a chain of planning precedents. As in many other instances that materialized in this city, each venture was based on a spot-zoning elaboration of a planning deal that balanced cost and benefits for PP agencies. In each test case, public benefits and properties were bargained and official policies were modified. Neo-liberal policies have escalated planning flexibility, linking local multi-spot zoning with extreme luxury and increasingly high buildings. However, as citizens’ criticism progressively questioned the legitimacy of PP planning, a judicial debate is now taking place concerning the definition and function of spatial planning. Focusing this debate and the urban planning tradition that led to it are proposed here as a way of evaluating the concrete assets of urban PP planning today.

Investigation of a measurement scheme based on IGES

The integration research of measuring machine and CAD information, just CMM/CAD integration technology, is far behind the information integration of mechanical processing and CAD. With the rapid development of information integration industry and in the manufacturing process of the parts with complex curve surface, it is crucial to integrate the measurement and machining procedures based on IGES as that IGES is a general ANSI standard of information exchange for CAD/CAM among different computer systems. The measuring path planning determines the realization of measuring each sampling point and the completion of all sampling points safely and effectively by using measuring equipment. Based on IGES in this paper, the calculation method of normal direction at the location of sample point is studied for different surfaces, so as to improve the measuring precision. Then the calculation strategy for the positioning points and the measuring range is established, and the identification method for the topological relation between surfaces is also researched for improving the measuring efficiency and security. At last, the measuring sequence of the sampling points to be planned reasonably based on TSP is given. It is believed that the research results can provide some useful contributions towards the development of automated inspection task planning and systems, especially for coordinate measuring machines.

Experimental and numerical studies on failure modes of riveted joints under tensile load

Though engineers are not advised to utilize riveted joints in tension, rivets will inevitably bear tensile load in realities. Hence, it is interesting to investigate the failure modes of riveted joints when they are under tensile load. Following previous studies (Chen et al., 2011), in this work, the authors selected three sizes of riveted joints to conduct the riveting and tension processes experimentally and numerically. Three kinds of failure modes including pull through, shank breaking, and head breaking were observed. Simulations are able to give almost the same results as those from experiments. Furthermore, three formulas were proposed to calculate the maximum tensile strength of riveted joints. Though the values calculated from these three formulas are approximate, they have the same order of magnitude as real ones. Moreover, they could be utilized to estimate which kind of failure mode may take place when riveted joints were under tensile load.
